Sliding Bore

Yesterday we had what I guess can be called a ‘Sliding Doors’ moment. We left for Italy early morning and our first encounter with public transport was reaching the tube platform just as the train pulled away, the ramifications of which we were unaware at the time, another was coming in 4 minutes, no biggie.

A couple of tube rides brought us to Finchley Road, but we must have also just missed the National Express coach we’d intended, as we had to wait 15 minutes for one to arrive, driven by a typically curt and unpleasant lady, a prerequisite apparently for National Express drivers.

The journey seemed particularly slow, and we began to get nervous, I’d never missed a flight and having come across some of those voyeuristic reality shows on ITV, knew airport staff made National Express drivers look like helpful cooperative Cub Scouts in comparison.

My worst fears were confirmed when we eventually reached the Check-In desk, 2 minutes late, and was told with all the compassion of a French Revolution Executioner, NON! We were not travelling to Ancona today.

After investigating options we chose to fly to Pisa, £200 lighter for the pleasure and 2 hours later.

On arrival we found the Terravision coach only to be told it was cash only, so while Silvia ran off to find a Bancomat, I waited with the bags, having secured our spot, or so I thought. When Silvia got back it turned out Terravision had, though fully aware of our situation, gone ahead and filled the bus, bar one slot, and despite my growing frustration I decided not to leave Silvia behind, especially knowing how useful she can be in Italy.

Our next option was train, or to be more precise, trains. We had to get a number of connections from Pisa station, via Florence, and some further unpronounceable Italian locations, to eventually get us to Perugia where Paolo, Silvia’s Babbo was going to be waiting to pick us up.

Pisa to Florence was fine, a peasant journey through the Tuscany scenery, but then on arrival our problems continued. We didn’t know which train was going to take us to our next connection, so spent a few minutes hunting it down. Finally we found it and started walking up the platform, just as said train started pulling out the station.

By now I’ve gone beyond fed up and reached resigned.

Having waited another half hour we got the next train, but to add to the economic fun of this scenario, this was apparently a special ‘Inter-City’ train, so although we’d already bought tickets, we had to buy a supplementary ticket as well, don’t ask, I never worked that one out.

By the time we’d got to our next change, Paolo clearly realized another potential journey via public transport might push Silvia and I over the edge, so instead of waiting in Perugia he’d come to meet us directly.

A couple of hour later we eventually got back to Cerreto d'Esi, at 8pm, a full 7 hours behind our usual schedule and about £250 worse off.

All this for missing a tube at 7am by 20 seconds.

It's been about 2 months since my last post on this thing, excuses range from Christmas, lack of PC, laziness and generally not knowing what to write. But from what I've heard a few people are suffering the same.

Quite a bit has happened since I last bothered to write anything, there was Christmas and New Year in Italy, which was fantastic, and very relaxing, the highlight being the chance to watch the Cereto local team playing at home, in a top of the table clash.

There has also been significant developments on the purchase of the flat front, and hopefully everything will be settled within a month or so, and we'll be the happy owners of a wicked new place. Well, a converted 100 year old pub anyway.

Personally I've got my 30th Birthday coming up soon, which although I'd intended to be a Madchester style indie revival, has because of financial constraints (assholes trying to make loads of money out of your joyful experiences) has now been reduced to a regular party in a bar, called ZenSai.

Hopefully a few old friends will make it, and I'm sure they'll all get on, I just hope I survive the night. Which is also my final night of being a smoker, which I'm both excited about, and dreading.

So, that's all I can muster for the time being, nothing that'll change the course of human history, but at least you know a little bit more than you did before, unless I've already told you this personally in which case I'm just going over old tad and should have just kept my mouth shut.

It would almost make you laugh, if not for the appalling realities which the Iraqi victims, both military and civilian must have gone through as a result of the usage of these weapons, which 95% of the world has ratified as being an acceptable in combat.

Part of the reason the Iraqi people were 'liberated', was because their tyrannical leader had used chemical weapons the Kurds, so the irony of the US Military resorting to, and originally denying use of, white phosphorus, is little more than amazing.

Obviously no war can be free of pain and suffering, that's the nature of the beast, but there are ethical lines that can be drawn, and history has shown, and continues to show that the US has no problems with repeatedly crossing those lines, while stamping on them along the way.

I'd imagine a story like this would generate a few more thousand disaffected souls, who will now rise up against the Western Oppressor, and we should see another increase in militant action.

If ever a job could be botched, the US authorities really know how to botch it good!

This weekend was my dad's 60th Birthday, which gave me an oppotunity to chat to some of his old friends, and also some family members I don't get to see very often. Obviously it was a lovely evening which went really well and everyone had a great time, but from the chats I noticed something, or at least I developed a theory anyway.

You get more Right-Wing, the older you get.

This doesn't bode well for where Andy might end up politically!

But it surprised me how the views of those people over 50 seemed to have hardened, perhaps from personal experience, or maybe from reading the Daily Mail to often, either way it was an interesting phenomenon to observe, if a little disheartening.

It's something that's only happening to my parents generation either, I've also noticed some elements of Rightwing thought being expressed by my peers, who for the main are a liberal thinking and fairly easy going, maybe we're maturing too soon?

That was a lovely weekend, with all the special people in my life, at least in England anyway ;o)

On Friday Silvia and I got a train to Woking and met up with my parents, where first we had a nice pizza together at the only non-shite chain place we could find, and then followed by an evening at the cinema to see Wallace & Gromit - Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
I can't recommend this film enough, for all ages, there was something to keep you hooked, with nods to cultural items that the elders will only get, as well as the obvious non-stop action and adventure for kids. Plus the bunnies are very cute!
There were a couple of moments when I was almost in tears of laughter, and another moment which literally made my mum jump out of her seat, which of course was even more hilarious for me!

Then after getting up reasonably early on Saturday, Silvia and I jumped in the car and pootled off to Bath for the day. The weather turned out really well, and as there was a Bath vs Gloucester Rugby match in the city at the time, there was an extra buzz about the place. I'd been before, a long time ago, when I was at University in Bristol, and so it was pretty much all new to me, as well as Silvia, and we were immediately taken by the beauty of the place. Picture Postcard kind of thing.
After Silvia had got her Wallace-esque Cheese fixation out the way with a bit of Goats Cheese from a cool little, er, Cheese Shop, we then looked for somewhere to have coffee. We eventually found a nice little Chocolate Shop (all the shops are theme, unless they a chain) and sat down quickly in order to get a nice spot by the window, giving view of the Abbey and the Roman Bath, but I was immediately accousted by a little Japanese waitress who demanded, 'order at counter, then you sit down!' I sheepishly left Silvia at the table while I did as ordered, and then we swapped places so Silvia could stock up with some uber-expensive Chocolates.
We then visited the Roman Baths, and at first it seemed a tad boring, like a dirty swimming pool, but then the tour took you deeper into the history, literally, and you began to appreciate more what you were seeing. Personally I'd like to have them demolish the surrounding shops and the Abbey (it's not like the Christain Faith doesn't have enough) and unearth all the other Roman ruins that are still buried out of site. The photo I've included was taken using my mum's digital camera, which is a few years old now, which meant that when I noticed a Japanse tourist with the same one, I was fairly suprised, seeing as they usually have the most upto date gadgets.

The Japanese tourist, upon noticing this little coincidence thought it was the most hiliarious thing ever, and kept laughing and shouting, 'SAME CAMERA, SAME CAMERA' while showing the evidence to his equally amused friends.
The rest of the day was spent enjoying the rest of the city, including the Rugby Ground, Sally Lunn's and of course, Ann Summers. :oO

On Sunday my plan of cooking duck for my parents was well scuppered, as I'd thought the frozen duck would be fine outside the fridge, for a couple of days, because it was quite big and thought it would take ages to thaw. However I think the warm weather over the weekend put paid to that theory, and it quickly found the bin, while I quickly went to Sainsbury's to get some beef.
My parents, Silvia and I then had a little trip to Primrose Hill, which I was suprised my parents hadn't been too before, although unfortunately it was a bit misty to the view was too great. It was still quite a pleasant walk. Then we came home and after some debate, came up with a recipe that both Silvia and I were happy with, and although the meat was a bit tough, it tasted very nice and everyone was satisfied.

So overall a lovely weekend, good to spend sometime with my parents, and a bit of quality time, just the two of us, with Silvia (outside the four walls of this bloody flat!)

After being financially screwed by my landlady for some months, it's dawned on me (well, Silvia's beaten it into me) that it might be a better idea to buy a place rather than rent.

With that in mind we've been looking for the past few months at places in London, but as yet they've either been out of our range, too far away, or in the case of the last place we visited, riddled with damp.

So it got me thinking, what about Italy, why not take the plunge and head to my girlfriend's homeland to set up a new life, so I had a brief look at what is on offer.

Get in there! Especially rewarding to see Andy Murray reach his first ATP final, after reading the typically pessamistic view held by a journalist writing in the Evening Standard, basically stating he wouldn't even expect AM to get into the World Top 50 this season.

I think coming back from a set down, to beat a local hero, at 18 proves that this guy is a bit of a gem, and hopefully, finally we might have someone to go that extra step that a valiant Henman couldn't quite go.

Great news from the Thailand Open, Andrew Murray, the new hope for British Tennis has not only broken into the world top 100, but he's now reached the semi-final of an ATP event.

I'm not a massive tennis fan, but Wimbledon is a fantastic event, and decent tennis can be as exciting as any game.

Especially as it look like the Henman days are definately over.

It's got to suck pretty bad, you've had your world turned upside down by Hurricane Kurina, Katrona, oh whatever Ms Bush said, and you find solace in Houston.... For about a week or so....

They interviewed a guy being evacuated for the second time in less than a month, and it's not often you see complete dispair, a complete unwillingness to go on any longer, but this poor guy had that look.

Poor old Johnny Woodgate, 17 months out of the game, and finally he makes his Real Madrid debut, into a pressure cauldron where the team where already getting a lot of flack after some recent bad results, and things didn't quite go as planned.

25 minutes in he proves his reactions and fitness are back up to scratch, by changing direction quickly enough to get a glancing header on a Bilbao strike, unfortunately this only put it the otherside of the goal that the keeper was going. 1 nil.

Then just before half-time he reminded us of his no (brainer) nonscene style of defending, as he straddle a forward at about waist hight with both legs, earning yellow card number one. And to cap a joyous night, he obstructed another Bilbao striker, preventing a possible counter-attack, and the ref had no option but to bring out another yellow card, then a red.

Luckily for Village, Real still managed to come away with a 3 - 1, and if there are any positives, at least his reason for an early bath was official rather than physical.

From what I've seen the experience of being out for so long has helped a former prized moron develop into a more rounded adult, in the same way John Terry seems to have turned things around for the better, and I do believe fully fit, and match ready these two former likely lads could be the mainstay of an England defence for many years to come, as Sol and Rio disappear up their own arses )<>(

Lame Ass Blog Man

That would be me, it's been more than a month since my last entry, and in that time Silvia has now got her own blog, and it's about 100 times better than this one, I'll sort out linking it somehow, but from what I can tell from most of my other links, I'm not too 'down', with the technical side of this thing.

Peaky has also done a nice little thing too, but any excuse for him to spout off is always good in his book. There you can also see lovely photos of his bambini.

So what happened, aside from reaching new levels of laziness, I had a holiday to Croatia, details of which are cover on Silvia's blog, including links to photos. But basically it was a lovely break, very relaxing and I'm very thankful to Silvia's dad for paying for pretty much everything, an absolute star!

This weekend just gone a few of the old crowd got together for Nic Hemley's 30th, which was really good and included a little gathering back at my 'free house'! I've attached a couple of photos taken with my camera phone, but they've not come out too well.

Aside from that not much else has been going on, the football continues, and after some poor results we've finally won a game again, so hopefully that'll be a turning point for our season.

I've put my studies on hold for Italian, I'm going to start a course in January at level 2, so I'll definately have to brush up on what I do know first, and I'm going to hold out on my ICM studies until I can potentially convince my company to pay for it, because I'm worth it!

Mo Mowlam was in my eyes a true legend, someone who got into Politics for the right reasons, and not selfish ones. I love this guy's work, I remember first noticing some graffiti on a bridge near Old Street, featuring policemen in riot gear, but having smilie faces.

I like his humour, and the fact that he uses graffiti to enhance the look of places, often in dire need of sprucing up, and the fact that he's almost like a Scarlet Pimperel of our times.

I wrote this a couple of days ago, while making my point about improving the environment in which people, especially from deprived areas, live in. Then low and behold I read this in The Guardian this morning, regarding Hasib Hussain, who of the apparent Suicide Bombers....

'He had always found an escape in football. But, and two years ago, the Hornets' pitch was closed down. At about the same time, Hussain seemed to disappear into another world, according to associates.'

Children need things to do, to feel part of the community they live in, they need to feel their thoughts and ideas are listened too, because if they don't they're going to look elsewhere for someone who they feel does believe in them, and sadly for this boy, that someone it seems had an extreme ideology that would lead to mass murder.

But on a much lesser scale, and I hope not too sound too middle aged, children today do feel disinfranchised, and turn to violence and vandalism to fill in their joyless lives. My parents bowling club is regularly attacked by youths, a whole generation are being left behind because we only see the end result, and the administration only answer is ASBOS! For fucks sake, the only ASBOS needed are the few hundred to stop our so called political represenatives from getting anywhere near Parliament.

How to spend £18 billion?

You're in government, and someone (the taxpayer) give you a cheque for £18 billion pounds, to spend wisely in order to improve the general well being and security of the populous, what do you do?

You could, as seems likely under the current government introduce a ID CARD, mmmm doesn't that sounds impressive, sounds like something that terrorists and naughty people wouldn't like, and might even stop them carrying out their awful acts, but that's not likely, as admited by the home secretary soon after the London bombings.

Alternatively you could put the money towards improving people living environments, regenerating run down areas, developing a community spirit, across social, racial and religious boundries. It's been proved through various projects that if you improve people localities, and get them involved in the work needed, then crime, violence and vandalism is reduced.

You could put some extra money towards local policing, I think I'd feel saver seeing a couple of bobbies walking down Kilburn High Road, compared to the feeling I'd have if I had an extra card in my wallet.

It's all about cause and effect. For politicans they too often ignore the cause, and look for something that's gonna be seen as effective, a vote winner, and the cycle of lost oppotunities will continue and nothing will improve.

It appears the London bombers came from England, and although I'm sure a nice communal garden and decent lighting wouldn't necessarily have made them think twice about what they did, it's more than likely that frustration with their situation, combined with global political issues and some seriously fucked up guidance, would have contributed to decisions.

A simple metophor. You're living in a flat share, with 5 other people who ignore you, but seem to get along together fine, plus the place is a shithole. You're going feel down, depressed, angry, and bitter. But lets say the other 5 people change, and start talking to you, and you find you're not very different, and you all start getting on as a group, and then you decide you're tired of living in filth, so you all tidy up the house, and keep it neat, you're ALL gonna feel a lot better, positive and united.

Imagine that house in the UK, a few more complications, especially when it comes to what colour to paint the bathroom, but it's possible and logical and something that needs to be done soon before the situation gets any worse.

When news first arrived last week, you knew what was going on immediately, you just hoped that 'power surge' might actually something that could ever happen, it just hadn't made the news before. Then when SKY started talking about a bomb on a bus, again there was still that faint hope that, 'hey, SKY make shit up all the time', sadly this time they were spot on and the attacks we were always expecting had finally arrived.

From the comfort of an office, even in the same city that's under attack from these morons, it's hard to take in what's going on, and what made things even more sureal was how so many people around me were completely unaffected by the news that was now coming through on the crappy office radio.

LONDON IS BEING ATTACKED BY TERRORISTS

But some people felt the pressing issues of invoices and faxes was more important. Now I understand that for some people a way of dealing with such significant moments in life is to carry on regardless, but this wasn't about that, this was something colder, that I felt had to deal with.
